Glasgow (Scotland), Aug. 2, GNA – Ghana’s campaign at the 2026 Commonwealth Games ended in dramatic fashion as the men’s 4x100m relay team narrowly missed out on a medal on the final day of the athletics competition.
The Ghanaian quartet comprising Benjamin Azamati, Joseph Paul Amoah, Mustapha Bokpin and Abdul Rasheed Saminu initially finished fourth in the final race won by Australia, with Canada placing second and Nigeria third.
However, Canada was subsequently disqualified over an infringement during the final baton exchange, temporarily elevating Ghana to third place with a time of 38.13 seconds.
The Commonwealth Games Association of Canada lodged a successful protest, resulting in the reinstatement of Canada’s silver medal position.
Ghana’s counter-protest was unsuccessful, leaving the team outside the medals.
The outcome meant Ghana concluded the Games with two medals. Zinabu Issah secured a silver medal in the women’s T57 shot put, while Amadu Mohammed claimed bronze in boxing.
Although Ghana’s medal haul was modest, several athletes delivered commendable performances and came close to reaching the podium.
Among them was Frema Agyei, who narrowly missed out on a bronze medal in judo.
The Games also witnessed significant milestones for some Ghanaian athletes competing in other disciplines.
Farrakhan Shaaban Mohammed represented the country in the men’s 1000m time trial final, marking an important moment for Ghanaian cycling.
In swimming, Abeiku Jackson produced another landmark performance by setting a new national record in the men’s 50m backstroke during the opening days of the Games.
His performance earned him a place in the semi-finals, although he was unable to progress to the final.
Ghana competed across a range of disciplines, including athletics, boxing, cycling, judo, para powerlifting, para swimming, swimming and weightlifting.
Despite several encouraging displays from athletes, Ghana was unable to surpass the five-medal tally achieved at the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games, finishing the Glasgow edition with two medals.
