Accra, May 08, GNA-Mr Michael Kpakpo Allotey, Mayor of the Accra Metropolitan Assembly has announced plans to employ over 30 young athletes and establish an official Armwrestling team to promote sports development and youth empowerment in the region.
The announcement was made during a ceremony held to honour the national armwrestling team following their outstanding performance at the just-ended Africa Championship where they secured an impressive 168 medals.
Addressing the gathering, Mr. Michael Kpakpo Allotey commended the athletes for their outstanding performance, hailing them as true patriots who upheld and projected Ghana’s image positively.
He noted that the athletes’ remarkable success deserved both recognition and support, which informed his decision to use his office to honour and celebrate their efforts.
He further revealed that when the team’s leadership first approached him with plans to develop the sport, he challenged them to demonstrate their potential by winning medals for the country.
Mr. Allotey stated that the athletes surpassed all expectations with their remarkable haul of 168 medals, a feat that compelled the Assembly to recognize, reward, and support their achievement.
The Mayor added that the selected athletes are expected to commence work on Monday, following the completion of the selection process by their leadership.
Mr. Alfred Allotey-Gaisie, the Municipal Chief Executive for the Korle Klottey Municipal Assembly, also reaffirmed his commitment to supporting sports development.
He explained that the Assembly intends to engage unemployed young athletes in productive activities while encouraging them to continue pursuing sports.
Ghana’s armwrestling team, the Golden Arms, delivered a dominant performance at the end of the two-day competition, clinching the overall title with an impressive haul of 71 gold, 63 silver, and 34 bronze medals.
