Accra, May 19, GNA — Mr Kofi Iddie Adams, the Minister for Sports and Recreation, has urged better preparation by Team Ghana ahead of the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, stressing the need to return with medals.
The Games are scheduled for July 23 to August 2, 2026, in a scaled-down format compared with the Birmingham 2022 edition.
Ghana is expected to field about 40 athletes to compete in athletics, boxing, cycling, judo, para-athletics, para powerlifting, para swimming and weightlifting.
Speaking at a press conference in Accra, Mr Adams said a little over GH¢11 million had been budgeted for Ghana’s participation, stressing that the funds must translate into winning of medals.
“We have allocated money for the Commonwealth Games, and we do know it would be one of the most expensive Commonwealth Games to have ever been hosted because of the change in city,” he said.
He said the Ministry had engaged with the Ghana Olympic Committee (GOC) leadership, including the President and the Chef de Mission, on funding and preparations.
Mr Adams called on officials to focus on improving the team’s readiness for the games and secure more medals.
“What they need to focus on is improving team preparations. We don’t want to go there and return medalless. We want to return with serious medals in areas like boxing, athletics and others,” he said.
He added that they are engaging the GOC for the Youth Olympic Games in Senegal, with budgetary allocations already made, as part of broader efforts to strengthen Ghana’s international sporting performance.
