Accra, May 19, GNA- The Global Evangelical Church (GEC) has demonstrated its commitment to national development and social responsibility by supporting the Ghana Prisons Service’s Prisons Improvement and Sustainability Pesewa Fund (PISPES).
The church made a cheque donation to the Fund through DSP Dora Ohenewah Lartey, an Officer of the Service.
The Right Reverend Prosper Samuel Dzomeku, the Moderator of the Church, presenting the cheque in Accra expressed the church’s excitement in contributing its quota to strengthening the Service’s inmates’ reformation agenda.
He noted that though the donation may be considered a “widow’s mite,” it would go a long way to help the Service achieve its vision of transforming lives.
DSP Lartey, receiving the donation explained that the PISPES Fund is an initiative of the Service through the Director-General, Mrs. Patience Baffoe-Bonnie (Esq), aimed at expanding strategic projects that support government efforts to improve the livelihood of prison inmates.
She commended the church for the thoughtful gesture and appealed to other churches and organizations to partner with the Service in its reintegration programs.
DSP Lartey highlighted that after significant efforts were made to reform inmates and prepare them for reintegration, society also has a responsibility to accept them back and avoid stigmatization.
She noted that giving discharged inmates a second chance and supporting their smooth reintegration will help prevent reoffending and enable them to become productive members of society once again.
Rev. Dr. Yohanes Kwasi Ahiabu, the Synod Clerk of the Church, commended the Ghana Prisons Service for stepping beyond inmates-housing to proper reformation and reintegration.
He encouraged other denominations and organizations to emulate the example of the Global Evangelical Church by contributing to the PISPES Fund, thereby strengthening Ghana’s collective effort to transform lives and reduce the return of inmates to prison for lack of societal acceptance.
The Prisons Improvement and Sustainability Pesewa Fund (PISPES) is an initiative by the Ghana Prisons Service aimed at improving the welfare of officers and inmates, promoting agricultural mechanization, and driving industrialization within prisons.
It aims to bridge the funding gap, reduce reliance on government subvention, and sustain transformative programmes of the Service.
