Trump: US could work with Iran to secure shipping in Strait of Hormuz

Washington, April 8, (dpa/GNA) – US President Donald Trump has said, shipping through the Strait of Hormuz could be secured jointly by the US and Iran, in comments to ABC News on Wednesday.

“We’re thinking of doing it as a joint venture,” he told the US broadcaster.

“It’s a way of securing it – also securing it from lots of other people,” he said, without going into further detail.

The US and Iran struck a two-week ceasefire overnight, with Tehran agreeing to temporarily reopen the Strait of Hormuz under certain conditions.

Meanwhile, Iran continues to maintain control over shipping traffic through the strait, which is vital for global oil and gas trade.

According to Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, safe passage through the Strait of Hormuz would be possible for two weeks, in coordination with Iran’s armed forces “and with due consideration of technical limitations.”

However, the vessel tracking service MarineTraffic has reported shipping traffic in the Strait of Hormuz is picking up again.
