Iran plans memorial service for assassinated supreme leader Khamenei

Tehran, April 8, (dpa/GNA) – A large memorial service is planned for Thursday in Tehran, 40 days after the killing of supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

People’s participation in this ceremony would be “a sign of loyalty to the Islamic Revolution and respect for the slain leader,” the press office of the Islamic authorities said.

A similar memorial service was due to take place on Wednesday, in the Shia holy city of Qom, south of Tehran.

The US and Iran announced a ceasefire deal overnight, after over five weeks of war.

Khamenei was killed on February 28, during US and Israeli airstrikes on his residence in Tehran.

According to Islamic custom, the 40th day after a person’s death has a particular importance, and marks the end of the mourning period.
