Trump spokeswoman says shooter wanted to kill Trump, other officials

Washington, April 26, (dpa/GNA) – US government spokeswoman, Karoline Leavitt, on Sunday described the attack at a gala dinner in Washington as an attempt to murder President Donald Trump and high-ranking people in his government.

Leavitt said on X that the Saturday dinner “was hijacked by a depraved crazy person who sought to assassinate the President and kill as many top Trump administration officials as possible.”

Leavitt, who was also seated in the VIP stand, said she was brought to safety with Trump and First Lady Melania.

“President Trump was truly fearless, but as he said last night, this political violence needs to end.”

The suspect’s motive was part of the investigation, Attorney General Todd Blanche said earlier. Based on initial findings, investigators assume the alleged gunman had targeted members of the Trump administration, Blanche said.

At the gala dinner with the capital’s press on Saturday evening, a heavily armed man stormed through a security checkpoint, and was overpowered by security forces. Shots were fired and the president was taken to safety by his bodyguards.
