Trump: Shooting wouldn’t have happened in the new ballroom

Washington, April 26, (dpa/GNA) – US President Donald Trump, described the shots fired at a gala dinner he attended in Washington, as another reason why the controversial ballroom at the White House he wants should be built.

“This event would never have happened with the Militarily Top Secret Ballroom currently under construction at the White House,” Trump said on Sunday. “It cannot be built fast enough!”

At the dinner for the capital press in a hotel in Washington on Saturday evening, a man stormed through a security screening and was overpowered by security forces. Shots were fired and the president was brought to safety by armed guards.

Trump said what happened there, was exactly the reason that every president over the past 150 years had insisted on building such a ballroom.

Trump had the White House’s historic East Wing demolished, and is planning a huge ballroom in its place. Citizens and historic preservationists have protested against the plan.

A judge temporarily halted construction a few weeks ago, after a lawsuit filed by historic preservationists. Trump said at the time that the hall also served the president’s security. Following an appeals court decision in mid-April, construction work is allowed to continue for the time being while the legal dispute continues.

Trump wrote further on Sunday: “While beautiful, it has every highest level security feature there is plus, there are no rooms sitting on top for unsecured people to pour in, and is inside the gates of the most secure building in the World, The White House.”
