Pythons take over ECG substation at Star Sawmill in Kumasi

Kumasi, April 27, GNA – Power restoration to residents in the Ahodwo enclave in Kumasi was unexpectedly delayed after two pythons invaded the Star Sawmill Substation, disrupting operations and forcing a temporary halt to restoration efforts.

Due to the presence of the two reptiles, faults team from the Ahinsan District of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) Limited could not get closer to the faulty transformer.

Speaking with the Ghana News Agency in an interview, Mrs. Hella Offei Awuku, the Ahinsan District Manager of the ECG, said on Wednesday, April 24, 2026, residents along the Ahodwo – Daban -Dr Asafo Adjei stretch experienced a power cut, prompting the deployment of a fault reparation team from the Ahinsan District to assess the situation and restore power to the affected areas.

Mrs. Awuku said the fault was rectified, and power was restored to all areas except the Cocoa Depot and Star Sawmill areas.

To complete the mission of power restoration to customers in the affected areas, Mrs. Awuku said the team moved to the Star Sawmill Substation to assess the situation.

On arrival, the team sighted the presence of a python in the faulty transformer.

All attempts by the team and some residents to capture it proved futile.

The team had to wait for a while until the python crawled beneath the transformer before they could swiftly replace the damaged fuse to restore power to the affected customers.

Mr. George Amoah, the General Manager of the Ashanti West Regional ECG, said the management of the Kumasi Zoological Garden was contacted to capture the python from the substation to restore calmness.

He disclosed that two pythons were found with some number of eggs laid at the substation.

The pythons with their eggs were captured by the zoologists and sent to the Kumasi Zoo to ensure safety in the area.

Mr. Amoah thanked the management of the Kumasi Zoological Garden for their swift response to their call.

He noted that this was one of the risks that the ECG workers took to ensure that every citizen enjoyed quality and safe power supply.

He admonished citizens to desist from employing the services of private technicians but to call on the ECG to report incidents of electrical faults which lead to power outages in their areas.

“Customers who experience any outage should contact our national contact centre on *0302611611*, report to the nearest District office, lodge a complaint on the ECG PowerApp or reach us via our social media handles *@ECGghOfficial* on Facebook, X, or Instagram for prompt intervention” he advised.
