Suhum (E/R), April 14, GNA – One person has been confirmed dead and nine others injured following a fatal road crash at Mile 44 near Suhum on the busy Accra–Kumasi Highway in the Eastern Region.
The Public Relations Unit of the Eastern Regional Command of the Ghana National Fire Service said in a statement copied to the Ghana News Agency on Tuesday.
It said the crash occurred in the early hours of Monday, April 13, 2026, involving a passenger bus and a MAN diesel trailer.
According to the authorities, preliminary investigations indicated that the crash was caused by wrongful overtaking by the bus.
Out of the 33 passengers on board, one male was pronounced dead at the scene, while nine others comprising eight males and one female sustained various injuries.
“The remaining 23 passengers escaped unhurt. Both vehicles involved suffered partial damage as a result of the impact,” the statement said.
It stated that emergency responders from the Ghana National Fire Service arrived promptly to secure the scene and assist with rescue operations, adding that no passengers were trapped in the wreckage.
Authorities said investigations were ongoing to establish the full circumstances surrounding the crash.
The Accra–Kumasi Highway has recorded several crashes in recent years.
In March 2026, a fuel tanker traveling from Tema to Kumasi overturned on the highway, spilling petrol and forcing a temporary closure of the major transport corridor, leaving commuters and freight vehicles stranded.
In 2023, a multi‑vehicle collision at Birimso involving a Toyota Highlander, Toyota Hilux, Toyota Vitz, and a Burkinabe trailer was reportedly triggered after the Vitz lost a front tyre and veered off its lane.
Similarly, in 2021, five persons were confirmed dead in a crash involving a Hyundai H100 minibus and a stationary MAN diesel truck at Suhum–Omenako. Five others sustained injuries and were treated at the Suhum Government Hospital.
Road safety authorities have therefore urged drivers to adhere strictly to traffic regulations, avoid dangerous overtaking, and exercise caution, especially on busy highways, to prevent further loss of lives.
Commuters are also encouraged to report reckless driving to the appropriate authorities.
