NADMO, MP support displaced residents after farmland clash

By Kingsley Mamore

Peposo (O/R), April 6, GNA – The Oti Regional office of the National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO), with Krachi Nchumuru MP, Mr Solomon Kuyon, has provided relief to Beposo residents displaced by a deadly farmland dispute.

The violent clash, which claimed one life and left several others injured, stemmed from a long-standing disagreement over the ownership and use of farmland between two Konkomba communities.

The incident resulted in the destruction of several properties, including houses, yam barns, tricycles, motorbikes and about 70 bags of cement.

The violence displaced many families, leaving them without shelter, food and sources of livelihood, thereby worsening the humanitarian situation in the area.

A report available to the Ghana News Agency (GNA) indicated that the communities have been embroiled in the land dispute for years, largely due to the absence of clearly defined land boundaries, leading to persistent tensions and recurring conflicts.

Speaking during a visit to the affected community, the Oti Regional Director of NADMO, Mr Foster Dzre, said the team was on the ground to assess the situation and provide immediate relief support.

“We are here to support our displaced brothers and sisters with essential relief items to help them cope with the current situation,” he stated.

The items distributed included 15 bags of rice, 15 bags of maize, three cartons of sunflower oil, 20 rubber buckets and 20 rubber pans.

The relief was shared among more than 100 affected families, in collaboration with local leaders to ensure fairness and transparency.

Mr Solomon Kuyon, who also donated 15 bags of rice and three cartons of sunflower oil, condemned the violence and called on security agencies to intensify efforts to apprehend and prosecute those responsible.

“We will not tolerate any form of violence or destruction of property in our constituency,” he emphasised.

The MP urged the feuding communities to embrace peace and dialogue, announcing plans to establish a committee to facilitate reconciliation and find a lasting solution to the conflict.

He also pledged to engage development partners to mobilise additional support for the affected residents.

A youth leader in Beposo, Mr Kofi Abudu, expressed gratitude to NADMO, the MP and the government for the timely intervention, noting that the support would go a long way in helping victims recover.

“We appreciate the support in this difficult time and appeal for further assistance, especially in rebuilding destroyed homes and caring for the injured,” he added.

He also called on the youth to remain calm and avoid actions that could further escalate tensions, stressing the importance of peace and unity.

The incident underscores the urgent need for effective and peaceful mechanisms to resolve land disputes in the region, where such conflicts continue to pose serious threats to lives and livelihoods.
