Techiman, (Bono East) April 02, GNA-The government will launch the Free Primary Health Care Policy this year, Dr Caroline Reindorf Amissah, the Deputy Director General of the Ghana Health Service (GHS) has said.

She explained that the policy remained a major intervention to address financial barriers in the nation’s primary health care system.

Dr Amissah explained that the policy prioritised population-based interventions like screening for Non-Communicable Diseases, health education and promotion and community sensitization and mobilisation activities.

She was speaking at the 2025 Annual Review Meeting of the Bono Regional Directorate of Health at Techiman.

Dr Amissah indicated that the GHS would soon embark on rapid staff orientation and training exercises nationwide which would also capture Community-Based Health Planning Services (CHPS) Zones.

She said the GHS Council remained dedicated to engaging the Ministry of Health and other relevant stakeholders to address barriers impeding quality healthcare delivery services, like staff constraints, funding limitations, infrastructure deficits, and equipment gaps.

“We remain committed to creating an enabling environment that allows you to perform your duties effectively”, she told the health workers, adding that: “We therefore count on your full cooperation for the smooth and timely rollout of the policy once it’s launched”.

Dr Freeman Samson Samani, the Bono East Regional Director of Health Services stressed the need to expand access to primary health care, especially in under-served communities and to strengthen referral systems and emergency transport.

He said there was also the need to improve maternal and newborn care, scale up prevention and management of NCDs, advocating a more equitable distribution of health facilities.

The meeting was on the theme: “Improving maternal and newborn health and NCD Outcomes through quality and accessible primary health care”.
