Suronuase, (Bono East) April 4, GNA – A head-on collision between a cargo truck and a bus on the Kintampo-Tamale highway in the early hours of Good Friday, has left nine persons dead, with 27 others in critical condition.
The Ghana News Agency (GNA) learnt that the accident occurred when the passenger bus with registration number GS-2564-20 crashed with the truck with registration number GR-4958-K and loaded with tomatoes around 0300 hours.
It happened at Suronuase, a community along the stretch in the Kintampo North Municipality of the Bono East Region when the driver of the bus reportedly attempted to overtake two vehicles, lost control, and veered into the other lane of the road.
The bus was heading to Widana in the Pusiga District of the Upper East Region while the truck was also coming from the opposite direction.
During a visit to the scene, residents in the area expressed concern about the deplorable condition of portions of the highway.
The bodies of the deceased had since been deposited at the Kintampo Municipal Hospital mortuary for preservation while the injured were presently received at the hospital.
Mr Isaac Donkor, the Kintampo Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) had since visited the scene and expressed his condolences and that of the government to the bereaved families.
In an interview with the media, Mr Donkor also expressed concern about the deplorable condition of portions of the highways and called on the Ghana Highway Authority to fix the road to avert future mishaps.
He noted that the spot was prone to crashes, worrying that: “This is about the fifth time a crash has occurred at that spot”.
Meanwhile, the tragedy has since left the people of Suronuase in a sombre mood, re-igniting public concern about the bad condition of the Kintampo-Tamale highway.
