‎Kumasi April 22, GNA – The Ghana Immigration Services (GIS) in the early hours of Tuesday, April 21, 2026, embarked on an intensive operation to rest illegal immigrants in some parts of Asawase, in the Asokore-Mampong Municipality.

‎The operation targeted multiple communities, where residents have complained about rising nuisance and deteriorating sanitary conditions linked to these illegal immigrants, particular foreigners begging on the streets.

‎Places where the operations took place were Asawase, Aboabo, Alabar, Sabon Zongo, Dagombaline and Akwatialine.

‎Deputy Commissioner of Immigration One (DCO1), Mr Fred Amankwa, Ashanti Regional Commander of GIS, told the Ghana News Agency that, the exercise, which began at 3:30 a. m, ended at 5:00 a.m.

He said the exercise had so far been successful and over 600 illegal immigrants were picked up during the operations and they were being prepared for repatriation.

Mr Amankwa noted that, those illegal migrants were picked up in a coordinated dawn operation by the Ghana Immigration Service (GIS) in Kumasi, following sustained public concern over the growing presence of foreign beggars in the Ashanti region.

He said among those arrested were 381 children, 153 males and 72 females.

‎They have been transported to Accra, where further screening would be conducted to determine their identities and send them back to their respective countries.

‎Mr Amankwa urged foreigners to always contact the GIS for resident permits before
