Accra, April 29, GNA – The Ghana High Commission in Pretoria, South Africa, has issued an advisory urging Ghanaian nationals to exercise caution following a significant protest in the Johannesburg CBD on Wednesday.

The mission said the protest, led by a group identified as “March and March,” is centred on concerns over unemployment and undocumented foreign nationals, and has already caused major traffic disruptions and interruptions to business activities within the central business district.

The High Commission, in a statement dated April 29, 2026 warned of a heightened risk of tension, particularly towards foreign nationals, and advised Ghanaians to avoid the affected areas unless travel was absolutely necessary.

“Those who live in Johannesburg are urged to remain indoors or in secure locations and limit unnecessary movement,” the statement said.

The mission further cautioned community members against engaging with protesters under any circumstances, even if approached or provoked, stressing that personal safety must remain a priority.

It also urged Ghanaians to carry valid identification and relevant documentation at all times.

The High Commission encouraged members of the Ghanaian community to maintain close communication with one another and to check on vulnerable individuals, while advising parents and guardians to ensure children remained in safe environments and avoid travelling through affected areas.

The statement emphasised the need to share only verified information and called on all nationals to remain calm and alert.

“The priority at all times is the safety and well-being of every member of our community,” it added.

The High Commission said it would continue to monitor developments and provide updates as necessary.
