Austria Endorses UN Resolution 2797 on Moroccan Sahara

Accra, April 24, GNA – Austria has expressed support for United Nations Security Council Resolution 2797 (2025), which affirms that genuine autonomy under Moroccan sovereignty represents the most realistic and feasible solution to the Moroccan Sahara issue.

The position was outlined in a joint communiqué issued on Wednesday following talks in Vienna between Austria’s Federal Minister for European and International Affairs, Ms Beate Meinl-Reisinger, and Morocco’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation and Moroccan Expatriates, Mr Nasser Bourita, who is on a working visit to Austria.

In the communiqué, Austria welcomed the adoption of Resolution 2797, which fully backs the efforts of the UN Secretary-General and his Personal Envoy to facilitate negotiations, using

Morocco’s autonomy plan as the basis, with a view to achieving a just, lasting and mutually acceptable political solution to the regional dispute.

Austria also welcomed Morocco’s willingness to provide detailed explanations on how genuine autonomy under Moroccan sovereignty would be implemented, according to the joint statement.

The communiqué noted that Austria’s position aligned with the growing international momentum in support of Morocco’s Autonomy Initiative and the sovereignty of Morocco over its southern provinces.

The strengthened stance follows diplomatic efforts led by His Majesty King Mohammed VI and culminated in the adoption of Resolution 2797 by the UN Security Council on October 31, 2025.
