Wild cheers as Baba Jamal clinches Ayawaso East bye-election victory

Accra, March 4, GNA – Mr Baba Jamal Mohammed Ahmed, Member of Parliament-elect, Ayawaso East Constituency, was welcomed with wild cheers by National Democratic Congress (NDC) party faithful after emerging winner of the bye-election held on Tuesday. 

Clad in white, Mr Jamal waved a white handkerchief in response to the chants of victory as he stepped out to acknowledge the enthusiastic supporters. 

Party supporters, dressed in NDC colours, were jubilant, dancing heartily amid singing, drumming, the blowing of vuvuzelas, motorcycle displays, and spirited party chants. 

Mr Jamal, according to official results by the Electoral Commission, secured 10,884 votes to clinch the seat. His closest contender, Mr Baba Ali Yussif of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), garnered 4,009 votes. 

Other candidates in the race were Mr Umar Sanda Mohammed, an independent candidate, who polled 1,885 votes; Mr David Akonor, also an independent candidate, who obtained 107 votes; and Mr Ibrahim Iddrisu of the Liberal Party of Ghana (LPG), securing 43 votes. 

A total of 17,048 votes were cast, out of which 16,928 were valid. Rejected ballots stood at 120. 

The bye-election became necessary following the death of the sitting Member of Parliament, Naser Mahama Toure, in January 2026. 

Five candidates contested the seat: Baba Jamal (NDC); Baba Ali Yussif, (NPP); Ibrahim Iddrisu, (LPG); Umar Sanda Mohammed, independent; and David Akonor, independent. 

A total of 49,966 registered voters were expected to elect a representative for the constituency. 

Ayawaso East has been a stronghold of the National Democratic Congress since 1992. 

In the 2024 General election,, the late Toure, who contested on the ticket of the NDC, polled 22,139 votes, while the NPP candidate, Zak Rahman, obtained 9,110 votes.
