Tamale Circuit Court sentences man to five years imprisonment over drug offences

Tamale, March 11, GNA – The Tamale Circuit Court has sentenced a man to five years imprisonment in hard labour for offences related to narcotic drugs while 20 other accused persons have been remanded into prison custody. 

The accused persons were on Monday, March 09, 2026, arraigned before the Tamale Circuit Court presided over by Mr Francis Asobayire after they were arrested by the Northern Regional Counter Terrorism Unit (RCTU) Special Operations Team. 

A press release issued by the Northern Regional Police Command and signed by Assistant Superintendent of Police Mr Alhassan Luckman Niendow, Northern Regional Public Relations Officer of the Ghana Police Service, and sighted by the Ghana News Agency, said  

It said the accused persons were charged with offences including use of narcotic drugs without lawful authority, possession of narcotic drugs without lawful authority, prohibited sale of restricted drugs without lawful authority, and possession of restricted drugs without lawful authority. 

It said out of the 21 accused persons, five pleaded guilty to the charges, and the court convicted one of them, Mahama Iddris, and sentenced him to five years imprisonment in hard labour. 

It said the court, however, deferred the sentencing of the remaining four accused persons, who pleaded guilty until the next adjourned date. 

The remaining 16 accused persons pleaded not guilty to the charges. 

It said all the remaining accused persons including the four whose sentencing was deferred, had been remanded into prison custody. 

The case has been adjourned to March 24, 2026, for reappearance.
