Son of Norway’s crown princess to remain in detebtion during rape trial

Stockholm, March 10, (dpa/GNA) – The eldest son of Norway’s crown princess, will remain in detention during his ongoing rape trial, a court in Oslo ruled on Tuesday.

The court rejected a request for release by Marius Borg Høiby, citing the seriousness of the case and a “high risk of reoffending.”

Lawyers for the 29-year-old had argued that such a risk no longer existed.

Høiby requested release during the trial, which began February 3. He had been arrested again shortly before the proceedings started, after allegedly violating a restraining order involving a former girlfriend and behaving recklessly. He has remained in custody since then.

The woman is among the alleged victims in the trial. An incident at her apartment triggered the investigation into the son of Mette-Marit in August 2024.

Investigators say Høiby was violent toward the woman several times during their relationship. However, the two continued to see each other regularly until shortly before the trial began.

The proceedings at an Oslo court are scheduled to run until March 19.

Høiby is being tried on 38 criminal counts, including four charges of rape. He has denied the sexual offence charges.

No date has been set for a verdict.
