Several Earthquakes strike Sicily

Rome, March 4, (dpa/GNA) – The region around Mount Etna on the Italian island of Sicily has been struck by several earthquakes, the strongest with a magnitude of 4.5, the National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology (INGV) said on Wednesday.

Initial reports indicate no major damage, however, several schools were closed as a precaution.

Mount Etna, at more than 3,300 metres, is Europe’s largest active volcano.

The strongest quake came shortly after 7 am (0600 GMT) and was also felt in the city of Catania, which lies at the foot of Etna and is home to 300,000 residents.

Mayor Enrico Trantino ordered the temporary school closures. Classes were also cancelled in other municipalities. The city’s airport, however, remained open.

Earthquakes are common in Sicily. Mount Etna erupts regularly and is constantly monitored. The eruptions typically offer a spectacular sight and attract many onlookers.
