SAMLESI (E/R), March 11, GNA – Residents of Samlesi Aplesu in the Yilo Krobo Municipality have appealed to the Lordina Mahama Foundation to construct a community-based Health Planning and Services (CHPS) compound to improve access to primary healthcare.
The appeal, led by the chief, Nene Teye Moses, and the Queenmother, Manye Dagye, highlighted the urgent need for a proper health facility to meet the community’s basic healthcare needs.
Speaking to the Ghana News Agency, Nene Moses said the current health post was too small, poorly equipped and unable to provide essential services.
“In emergencies such as snakebites, victims must travel to distant towns for treatment, and delays can sometimes be fatal,” he said.
He noted that pregnant women, children and the elderly were the most affected, often travelling long distances on poor roads to facilities such as Tafo Government Hospital.
The chief said the appeal was inspired by reports that the First Lady had commissioned CHPS compounds in parts of the Oti Region, adding that similar support would greatly improve healthcare in Samlesi Aplesu.
Queenmother Manye Dagye also expressed concern about the difficulties expectant mothers face during labour due to the lack of a properly equipped health facility.
The traditional leaders said the absence of a functional CHPS compound had led to avoidable suffering, particularly during nighttime emergencies when transport options are limited.
Despite the challenges, the community has secured land through communal efforts for the project, demonstrating its readiness to partner with the Lordina Mahama Foundation to build and equip the facility.
“What remains now is support to build and equip the facility to serve our people,” Nene Moses said.
Residents are therefore appealing to the Foundation and other partners to support the project, noting that a CHPS compound would help reduce maternal and child deaths, improve emergency response and enhance overall health outcomes in the community.
