Road Ministry, BRRI strengthen collaboration to address road sector challenges

Accra, March 2, GNA – Mr Governs Kwame Agbodza, the Minister of Roads and Highways, has underscored the critical role of science-driven solutions in addressing persistent challenges within the country’s road sector.

“We cannot continue to invest heavily in road construction only to see our roads deteriorate prematurely, while research by our institutions continue to gather dust on their shelves,” he said.

“Scientific research and strict quality control must guide every stage of our road projects.”

The Minister made these remarks when a delegation from the Building and Road Research Institute (BRRI) of the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), led by Professor Michael Affam, the Board Chair, paid a courtesy call on him at the Ministry.

The visit was to explore renewed areas of collaboration to enhance the delivery, durability, and overall quality of road infrastructure across the country.

Discussions during the meeting focused on key technical and regulatory areas, including asphalt certification, road audits, axle load control, as well as the design and supervision of road construction projects.

Both parties acknowledged that stronger integration between research and policy implementation was essential to achieving sustainable outcomes in the sector.

They also renewed shared commitment to leveraging research, innovation, and coordinated policy action to deliver durable, high-quality roads capable of meeting Ghana’s growing transportation demands.

“We are ready to deepen our partnership with BRRI to ensure that our road designs, materials, and supervision processes meet the highest standards. Together, we can build roads that truly stand the test of time,” the Minister added.

Professor Affam reaffirmed BRRI’s commitment to supporting the Ministry with research-backed expertise and technical guidance.

“We have a long-standing relationship with the Ministry and we are ready to collaborate with you to improve our road network,” he said.
