Nkwanta South clashes: Four arrested as security forces move in

By Kingsley Mamore, GNA

Dambai (O/R), March 31, GNA – Four individuals have been arrested following renewed violent clashes in the Nkwanta South Municipality, prompting a swift and reinforced security response from the government.

The arrests were confirmed by Mr John Kwadwo Gyapong, the Oti Regional Minister, after an emergency joint meeting between the Regional Security Council (REGSEC) and the Municipal Security Council (MUSEC).

Mr Gyapong disclosed that one suspect had been remanded into custody at the Kete-Krachi Prison, while three others were assisting police with ongoing investigations.

The latest unrest comes despite mediation efforts involving leaders of the Adele, Akyode, and Challa ethnic groups, aimed at resolving long-standing tensions in the area.

The Minister expressed concern that violence has resurfaced despite sustained dialogue among stakeholders.

He stated that efforts are underway to identify and address the root causes to prevent future occurrences.

Mr Gyapong has also appealed to community leaders to support peace initiatives and intensify dialogue among residents.

In response, government had significantly increased security presence in the municipality, deploying over 120 police officers and 150 military personnel to restore calm and prevent further escalation.

Authorities had urged residents to remain calm, cooperate with security agencies and report any suspicious activities.

Joint patrols have been intensified in identified hotspots, while checkpoints have been mounted to monitor movement and deter further violence.

Security personnel are also focusing on protecting vulnerable areas, including schools and markets to reassure residents and support the resumption of normal activities.

The situation remained under close monitoring as security forces intensify operations to restore stability.

The Regional Minister, together with security officials are expected to tour affected communities to assess the situation and engage local leaders.

Authorities remain optimistic that the enhanced security measures will stabilise the municipality and enable displaced residents to return to their homes.
