Ho, March 20, GNA – Mr Edem Kofi Kpotosu, a Member of Parliament of Ho Central has organised a free comprehensive health screening for drivers and their assistants in Ho.
The initiative, which formed part of the MP’s birthday celebration, replaced the usual festivities with a health-focused outreach targeting commercial drivers and their mates in the municipality.
In an interview with the Ghana News Agency on March 19, Mr Edem Kpotosu underscored the need for regular medical check-ups among drivers, particularly eye examinations, stressing that good vision remained critical to road safety.
“It is an amazing honour celebrating my birthday with my beloved constituents, but I chose health over merrymaking to give back meaningfully,” he said.
Mr Kpotosu explained that the exercise included free eye screening, new registration and renewal of National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) cards, as well as checks for diabetes, high blood pressure, and other conditions.
He noted that many drivers often neglected routine health checks due to the nature of their work, a situation he said could endanger both their lives and passengers.
“Nothing mobilises people more quickly than addressing issues that directly affect them. With my team, we ensured this intervention reached those who needed it most,” he added.
The MP expressed gratitude to the Ho Municipal teams of the Ghana Health Service (GHS) and NHIS for their collaboration, describing the partnership as essential to delivering quality healthcare services at the grassroots.
The screening exercise, he said, was open to all eligible drivers and their assistants, urging them to take advantage of the opportunity to undergo comprehensive health checks.
Mr Dickson Dogbaste, Chairman of the GPRTU Branch Two in Ho, together with beneficiary drivers, commended the MP for the initiative, describing it as timely and impactful in improving their health and safety on the roads.
