Cairo, March 11, (dpa/GNA) – At least one person was killed in an attack on two oil tankers in The Gulf, Iraqi authorities said early on Thursday.
The attack, which occurred in Iraqi territorial waters, was a violation of the country’s sovereignty, state news agency INA quoted a military spokesman as saying. Six vessels were dispatched to assist the crews of the two tankers, he said.
A total of 38 crew members were recovered, one of them dead, the spokesman added.
Ships have repeatedly come under attack in The Gulf, the Strait of Hormuz and the Gulf of Oman since the start of the war in Iran, which was triggered by a US-Israeli offensive on February 28.
Iran has since launched missile and drone attacks across the region, and is reported to have laid mines in the strategically important Strait of Hormuz, bringing commercial shipping in the region almost to a standstill.
