Iran hits Kurdish groups in northern Iraq

Baghdad, March 4, (dpa/GNA) – Iran’s armed forces attacked positions of Kurdish groups in Iraq on Wednesday with missiles, Iran’s state broadcasters reported on Wednesday, citing the powerful Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC).

The headquarters of “separatist” groups in the autonomous Kurdish region of northern Iraq were targeted, the IRGC said.

President Donald Trump had spoken by phone with Kurdish leaders in Iraq, and discussed further steps in the war against Iran, according to a Kurdish political party and the Wall Street Journal, which cited US government officials.

Trump is said to be considering supporting the Iraqi Kurds in a fight against Iran. The Iraqi Kurds have stationed numerous fighters along the border with neighbouring Iran, and also have ties to the Kurdish minority within Iran.

The Kurds are an ethnic group of an estimated 30 million people living primarily in Iraq, Iran, Syria and Turkey. They have fought for decades for their own state, and were long persecuted and suppressed in both Iraq, Iran and Turkey. The autonomous Kurdish region in Iraq was established following the ousting of dictator Saddam Hussein in 2003.
