GRA domestic tax commissioner backs relaunch of IPS to boost revenue mobilisation

By Stanley Senya
Accra, March 19, GNA – Dr. Martin Kolbil Yamborigya, the Acting Commissioner for the Domestic Tax Revenue Division of the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA), has described the relaunch of the Institute of Professional Studies (IPS) as a significant step toward strengthening revenue mobilisation in Ghana.

Speaking at the relaunch event in Accra, he said the Authority depended heavily on trained professionals, particularly accountants, auditors and tax experts, to carry out its mandate effectively.

He noted that the work of the GRA was central to national development because it was responsible for mobilising revenue to support government programmes and infrastructure projects across the country.

“The event is very significant for us. As you know, the Ghana Revenue Authority is an institution that is responsible for mobilising revenue for development. Our work depends a lot on professionals, especially accountants, auditors and tax professionals,” he said.

Dr Yamborigya explained that the Institute of Professional Studies had over the years trained many professionals who were currently supporting the Authority in its work, particularly in domestic tax collection and compliance.

According to him, the relaunch of the institute would help produce more skilled and ethical professionals who would contribute meaningfully to strengthening the country’s revenue mobilisation efforts.

He said: “The Institute of Professional Studies has trained a lot of people in this area who are supporting us very much in revenue mobilisation. That is why we see this relaunch as being very significant, because when we have more trained professionals, their work will enhance revenue mobilisation in Ghana.”

The relaunch forms part of broader efforts by the University of Professional Studies, Accra (UPSA) to reposition the institute as a key centre for professional education and training in the country.

Dr Yamborigya encouraged students and young professionals wishing to acquire professional qualifications to enrol in the institute, stressing that the training offered was beyond academic knowledge.

He noted that the institute places strong emphasis on ethics and professional standards, which were critical in building a credible and efficient tax system.

“I will continue to encourage people who want to attain professional qualifications to come to the Institute of Professional Studies at the University of Professional Studies, Accra. Here, you are not only trained in knowledge, but you are also given professional ethical training. That makes you a full professional who can contribute meaningfully to society,” he said.

He added that strengthening professional education would not only support the work of the GRA but would also help improve accountability and efficiency across both the public and private sectors.

The relaunch event brought together officials from the university, students, tax professionals and other stakeholders in the education and financial sectors, who expressed optimism that the institute would play a stronger role in developing the skilled workforce needed to support Ghana’s economic growth.
