Dormaa-Ahenkro (Bono), March 26, GNA – The Dormaa Central Municipal Assembly in the Bono Region has set up independent committee to probe into an alleged allocation of market sheds at a temporary site, as the government upgraded the Dormaa Tuesday Market into a 24hour Model Market.
President John Dramani Mahama performed a ground breaking ceremony for the construction of the Market which contained a creche, Police post, fire service, and other facilities at Dormaa-Ahenkro last Wednesday.
Hitherto, the assembly authorities relocated traders and market women from the Tuesday Market to the new site, near the Nana Agyemang Badu I Stadium to pave way for the construction of the 24-Hour Economy Market.
Since then, the Municipal Assembly has come under intense public scrutiny over alleged extortion of money characterising the allocation of market sheds at the temporary market site, near the Nana Agyemang Badu I Stadium.
During a visit to the Tuesday Market, the Ghana News Agency (GNA) noticed that the yam and plantain sellers were yet to relocate.
Some of the market women and traders told the GNA that they were unhappy that some of the traders were spearheading and collecting monies for the relocation process.
They also cited bias, lack of broader consultation, as well as favouritism in the entire process.
Commenting on the allegations, Dominic Adomah Ameyaw, the Dormaa Central Municipal Chief Executive, told the GNA that the committee was tasked to investigate the problem and urged the traders to remain calm.
“We will get you the feedback when they are done”, he stated.
An officer of the Assembly who pleaded anonymity told the GNA that there were enough spaces at the new site to accommodate the traders and market women and assured that everyone would have a place to sell.
Madam Amina Kramo, a tomato and pepper seller, said she was unhappy that the assembly for not consulting her before demolishing her market shed at the Tuesday Market.
