Adaklu Waya (V/R), March 25 GNA – Mr Emil Akpator, the Deputy Director of the Adaklu District National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) has said Ghanaians need attitudinal change to prevent man-made disasters.
“We need attitudinal change to prevent man-made disasters like floods and domestic fires,” he said.
Mr Akpator stated this in a telephone interview with the Ghana News Agency, in response to his outfit’s preparedness for disaster management in the district.
He called on Ghanaians to stop throwing garbage into drains, building on waterways or unauthorised areas and avoid flood-prone areas, to help save life and property.
Mr Akpator also entreated the public to regularly desilt their gutters and also plant trees around their houses, to serve as windbreaks in times of rainstorms.
He also advised them to switch off all their electrical gadgets when leaving home or those that were not in use, as well as ensuring they used the right gas cylinders and hoses.
He stated that NADMO was shifting focus from disaster management to disaster risk reduction, to minimise man-made disasters in the country.
The Director said he and his team were organising community durbars, information through local centres and radio stations in the district, to sensitise and educate the citizenry on disaster preparedness, prevention, and management.
However, he raised concern about the lack of logistics saying, “for now our stores are virtually empty.”
Mr Akpator was optimistic that with the support of Mr Governs Kwame Agbodza, the Minister of Roads and Highways and Member of Parliament of Adaklu and Mr Jerry Yao Ameko, the District Chief Executive, he was sure they could combat any unforeseen disaster that would occur in the district.
