Afghanistan floods kill 28, injure 49 amid severe weather

Islamabad, March 30, (dpa/GNA) — At least 28 people have been killed and 49 injured across Afghanistan since March 26, due to heavy rainfall, floods, landslides and lightning strikes, the country’s National Disaster Management Authority (ANDMA) said on Monday.

The agency said more than 1,100 families have been affected, with widespread damage reported to homes, infrastructure, farmland and livelihoods across multiple regions.

ANDMA cautioned that the figures remain provisional, as assessment teams continue surveys in different parts of the country.

Afghanistan’s meteorological agency forecast further heavy rain accompanied by thunderstorms on Monday, warning of continued severe weather, including strong winds and flash floods, in at least 15 of the country’s 34 provinces in the coming days.

Deadly flooding has struck Afghanistan repeatedly in recent years, causing significant loss of life, injuries and widespread damage to homes, infrastructure and agricultural land.

Extreme weather events such as flash floods and droughts are increasing in Afghanistan, which experts link to the climate crisis.

Despite having a negligible carbon footprint, the country ranks among the most climate-affected nations and remains ill-prepared to cope after decades of conflict, poor infrastructure, and a struggling economy, compounded by recent earthquakes and severe flooding.
