Accra, March 26, GNA – The Parliamentary Select Committee on Youth and Sports has thrown its weight behind the national fundraising initiative to support Ghana’s participation in the FIFA World Cup 2026, calling it a “national movement” that offers every Ghanaian a chance to contribute to a shared vision.

“It is more than a campaign. It is a national movement. It offers an opportunity for every Ghanaian to contribute to a shared vision and to be part of a historic journey,” Mr. Ernest Henry Norgbey, the Chairman of the Committee, said during a press briefing in Parliament on Thursday.

He said the initiative, launched by President John Dramani Mahama, aims to raise $30 million for team preparation, logistics, and welfare.

President Mahama has officially launched a $30 million fundraising campaign to support the Black Stars’ 2026 FIFA World Cup bid.

The initiative features a “World Cup Raffle” (dial *899#) aiming to secure corporate and public funding, aiming to reduce reliance on government funds for the tournament.

To whip up the interest of all, Mr. Norgbey appealed to corporate Ghana, the private sector, and individuals to support the effort, emphasizing that government alone could not bear the financial burden.

He said, “We urge all Ghanaians to come on board and support our beloved Black Stars.”

Mr. Norgbey, also a National Democratic Congress (NDC) Member of Parliament (MP) for Ashiaman, added that the team’s success was a matter of national pride.

He also assured stakeholders of strict accountability and transparency in the management of funds, with regular engagement and updates.

The fundraising initiative has been hailed as a platform for strengthening national unity, inspiring the youth, and enhancing Ghana’s international image.
