Sagnarigu (N/R), Feb 22, GNA – Residents of Fuo and surrounding communities in the Sagnarigu Municipality of the Northern Region are grappling with an acute water crisis forcing some to compete with animals for water at the Fuo dam as the facility gradually dries up.

The dam, which serves residents of Fuo, SSNIT, Kalpohin, Taha and other adjoining communities, has become the sole reliable water source for many households following persistent supply interruptions from the Ghana Water Limited (GWL).

During a visit to the area, the Ghana News Agency observed women and children struggling to fetch water as livestock also drank from the same source, raising concerns about sanitation and safety.

Madam Mohammed Aisha, a mother of four and resident of Fuo, described the situation as distressing and a threat to community wellbeing.

Madam Mohammed Aisha, a mother of four and resident of Fuo, described the situation as distressing and a threat to livelihoods.

She said “We wake up as early as 3 a.m. just to search for potable water. As you can see, the dam, which is now our major source of water, is drying up as we are even competing with animals.”

Alhassan Memunatu, a student, said the water crisis was affecting her punctuality to school and academic performance.

She said “Sometimes, I go to school late because I have to fetch water first. When the taps don’t flow, we have no option but to come here.”

Mr Iddrisu Mohammed Sadat, Assembly Member for the SSNIT/Fuo Electoral Area in the Sagnarigu Municipality, said the water crisis had been a longstanding challenge in the area.

He said the Assembly, in collaboration with the GWL and other stakeholders, were working assiduously to address the situation.

He said the situation had worsened in recent months due to low water production from GWL and increased demand from residents of Tamale.
