Sunyani (Bono), Feb. 24, GNA-Superintendent Eric Anaba, the Sunyani West Municipal Police Commander, says rise in substance abuse is contributing to surge in criminal activities in the area.
He said strong partnership was required between the police and the Narcotic Control Board (NACOB) to stem the trend and cautioned the youth in the area to stay away from hard drugs and substance abuse in order not to find troubles for themselves.
Supt Anaba gave the advice when the personnel of the Sunyani West Municipal office of the NACOB paid a courtesy on him at Odumase, the Municipal capital and led by Narcotic Control Officer (NCO) Fidelia Ali Yamusah, Sunyani West Municipal Commander of the NACOB.
They also visited the office of the Sunyani West Directorate of Education as well as the office of the Ghana-West African Programme to Combat AIDS and STI (WAPCAC) to build and deepen collaborations.
Supt Anaba, however, added that crime was under control and stressed the police’s readiness to combat crime in the area.
NCO Yamusah later told the Ghana News Agency (GNA) that the office of the NACOB had begun gathering intelligence to clamp down on the growing drug menace in the area.
She said the opening of the office in the area sought to regulate and control the use and abuse of narcotic drugs as well as prevent trafficking too.
NCO Yamusah explained that the office had intensified education on drug and substance abuse on the airwaves and would soon extend it to schools.
