Accra, Feb. 26, GNA – Campaigns towards the Ayawaso East Constituency by-election have intensified as party stalwarts and contenders storm the constituency.
On Wednesday, Mr Johnson Asiedu Nketia, He Chairman of the National Democratic Congress, took to the streets of Nima, moving between the local Market and the Islamic Research Institute to campaign massively for the party’s candidate, Mr Baba Jamal.
On the other hand, Mr Justin Frimpong Kodua, General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party, and Mr John Boadu, former General Secretary of the party, were seen campaigning for their candidate in a neighbourhood known as “Gutter”.
The campaign was not limited to the presence of these personalities.
Campaign vans, accompanied by music and owned by the respective candidates, were seen moving through the inner communities, vigorously campaigning for their candidates.
Door-to-door and house-to-house campaigns were also in full force, as supporters of the candidates visited homes to make a case for the individuals they represent.
These campaign activities are expected to intensify in the coming days as constituents head to the polls to elect their representative following the death of the Member of Parliament for the constituency, Mr Naser Mahama Toure, in January 2026.
The election is being keenly contested by five parliamentary candidates, namely: Mr Baba Jamal of the National Democratic Congress (NDC); Mr Ibrahim Iddrisu of the Liberal Party of Ghana (LPG); Mr Baba Ali Yusif of the New Patriotic Party (NPP); Mr Umar Sanda Mohammed, Independent; and Mr David Akonor, Independent.
A total of 49,966 registered voters are expected to elect the constituency’s representative on 3 March 2026.
Ayawaso East has been a stronghold of the National Democratic Congress since 1992.
In the most recent general elections, held in 2024, the late Member of Parliament, who stood on the ticket of the National Democratic Congress, polled 22,139 votes, while the New Patriotic Party candidate, Mr Zak Rahman, polled 9,110 votes.
