Accra, Feb. 18, GNA – Police have arrested a 33-year-old cloth seller in connection with the alleged theft of a four-day-old baby boy from the Neonatal Ward of the Mamprobi Polyclinic.
The suspect, Latifa Salifu, was arrested by the Dansoman Divisional Police and is expected to be arraigned on Thursday.
Speaking to the media, Superintendent Juliana Obeng, Head of Public Relations at the Greater Accra Regional Police Command, said the case was reported on Tuesday, February 17, at about 1000 hours by Abigail Dzikpornu and another person.
Police subsequently visited the Mamprobi Polyclinic, where statements were taken from the baby’s mother, Precious Ankomah.
According to the mother, she delivered the baby on February 14, 2026, at the facility.
She told police that a woman dressed in a nurse’s uniform took the baby under the pretext of administering medication but failed to return.
Supt. Obeng said the suspect was arrested on February 18, 2026, at about 0340 hours at the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital.

Preliminary investigations showed there were no records indicating that the suspect had delivered a baby at the hospital.
She was, therefore, arrested on suspicion that the child she was carrying was the stolen baby.
The baby is currently in safe custody and has received medical attention, Supt. Obeng said.
She urged hospitals and health facilities to strengthen security measures to prevent such incidents.
Supt Obeng recommended the introduction of visitor logs and strict verification procedures before babies were released to caregivers.
She also appealed to hospital authorities to promptly report any suspicious persons to the police.
