Over 100 Residents in Obuasi Benefit from Free Eye, ENT Screening

Obuasi (Ash), Feb. 27, GNA – Over 100 residents in Obuasi have benefited from a free eye screening and treatment programme organised by the Mama Love Foundation in partnership with Bellview Eyecare and Optical Services.

The outreach, aimed at improving access to quality healthcare, provided free eye screening and treatment, as well as screening and care for ear, nose and throat (ENT) conditions.

The initiative sought to address the growing need for preventive healthcare services within the community.

Dr. Afua Frempong Kyeremeh, Chief Executive of Bellview Eyecare and Optical Services, speaking to the media on the sidelines of the exercise, explained that many people do not voluntarily seek preventive eye care, making such outreach programmes necessary.

She noted that the decision to include ENT screening and treatment was to ensure participants received more comprehensive healthcare support.

Dr. Kyeremeh expressed concern about the increasing cases of eye diseases in the country and highlighted a major challenge in addressing the situation.

She cited the exclusion of medicated lenses from the coverage list of the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) as a significant setback.

“The drawback hampering our fight against the rise in eye disease cases is the absence of medicated glasses in the list of items supported by the NHIS. I appeal to government to look into that and add it to the list. This will help resolve a lot of the eye-related cases we are witnessing in this country,” she stated.

Madam Love Konadu, President of the Mama Love Foundation, said the Foundation was motivated to organise the outreach after realising that many people rarely volunteer for eye, ear, nose and throat screening.

According to her, the exercise proved highly impactful, as several beneficiaries had been living with untreated conditions but were unable to seek medical attention due to financial constraints.

Dr. Konadu reaffirmed the Foundation’s commitment to supporting the needy and vulnerable in society through similar interventions.

Participants expressed gratitude to both organisations for bringing quality healthcare services directly to the community.
