Dambai (O/R), Feb 11, GNA – The Oti Regional Co-ordinating Council (ORCC) has issued a press statement on the recent communal conflict in Abunyanya near the Nkwanta North District, correcting what it described as misleading social media reports.
The Regional Security Council (REGSEC) stated that the Oti Regional Minister, Mr John Kwadwo Gyapong, did not interfere with the constitutional mandate of security agencies to protect lives and property.
According to the statement, the conflict began on January 24, 2026, when some youth from Abunyanya No.2, led by Mr Eric Mahama, attempted to confront a developer over a disputed land parcel at Abunyanya No.1. The confrontation escalated into gunfire, leaving one person injured.
It said a meeting between community opinion leaders and the Divisional Police Command was held on January 31, 2026, to promote restraint and resolve the dispute.
On February 1, 2026, police received reports of gunshots and house burnings in Abunyanya No.1 and Abunyanya No.2. A joint police-military patrol later found two burnt houses and two adult male bodies with gunshot wounds.
The deceased were identified as Gabuja Balator and Tanaja Ntyaon. Their bodies were conveyed to the Nkwanta South Municipal Hospital for autopsy.
REGSEC said it would continue to monitor the situation to restore peace and security in Abunyanya and the Nkwanta North District. It urged the public to disregard false information and warned that anyone who disturbed the peace would face legal action.
