By Daniel Agbesi Latsu

Kadjebi (O/R), Feb. 27, GNA – The Oti Region has registered a total of 453,537 active members under the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) out of a projected population of 799,277 as of December 31, 2025.

The initial membership target, representing 50 per cent of the population, was 396,498, while the revised Universal Health Coverage (UHC) benchmark of 80 per cent was set at 639,422 within the period.

Mr Israel Quarme Ayer, Senior Manager for Monitoring and Evaluation at the Oti Regional Office of the National Health Insurance Authority, disclosed this during an inter-service and sectoral collaboration meeting at Kadjebi in the Oti Region.

He noted that the region exceeded its 50 per cent annual target by 57,039 members.

Mr Ayer attributed the 2025 performance to institutional registration campaigns, market activation strategies, expansion of mobile registration, and daily performance dashboard monitoring.

Despite the achievement, he highlighted challenges faced by the office, including inadequate staff strength, lack of vehicles, poor internet connectivity, and frequent breakdowns of biometric systems.

Regarding the 2026 target, Mr Ayer said a projected population of 810,654 had been set, with the UHC benchmark of 80 per cent translating into 648,523 active NHIS card members. This would require an additional 194,986 active members.

He emphasised that the expansion could not be achieved by the NHIA alone and called on the Ghana Education Service, District Assemblies, Ghana Health Service, and the Social Welfare Department to collaborate in achieving the target.

ā€œOur objective is not just enrolment growth, but sustained active membership and improved utilisation,ā€ he added.
