Wa (UW/R), Aug. 11, GNA – The campaign team of Alhaji Alaska B. Kanton, an aspirant for the Upper West Regional Chairmanship of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), says delegates are responding positively to its campaign message ahead of the party’s regional elections.
The team said it was seeking to transform the party’s leadership and operations in the region by prioritising grassroots engagement, experienced leadership and effective representation of the interests of party members.
Mr Bukari Ali, a member of Alhaji Alaska’s campaign team, said this in an interview with the Ghana News Agency (GNA) in Wa ahead of the NPP regional elections scheduled for Saturday, August 15, 2026.
The elections are expected to elect regional executives to steer the affairs of the party in the Upper West Region for the next four years.
Mr Ali said Team Alaska’s campaign was anchored on building a leadership team capable of making the NPP more attractive to non-members and improving its electoral performance in the 2028 general election and beyond.
“Our key message to the delegates and to the people of the Upper West region, in particular, is that we are going to change the face of the party in the region and bring to bear what the constituents, the delegates, the politicians and the grassroots want,” Mr Ali explained.
According to him, if elected, the team would reorganise the party around the grassroots, strengthen constituency structures, mobilise resources for constituency activities, and provide assertive and inclusive regional leadership.
Mr Ali, who is also contesting for the position of Regional Communications Director, said the team had deliberately assembled individuals with extensive grassroots political experience to reposition the party in the region.
He said Alhaji Alaska possessed the leadership qualities needed to effectively represent the interests of the region at the party’s National Executive Committee (NEC).
Mr Ali explained that regional chairmen of the NPP automatically become members of the NEC, a key decision-making body responsible for formulating major party policies and strategies.
He, therefore, emphasised the need for a regional chairman who was intelligent, articulate and courageous enough to present the aspirations and concerns of the region to the national leadership of the party.
He added that a regional chairman should demonstrate a strong commitment to grassroots mobilisation, particularly at a time when the party was in opposition.
Mr Ali cited Alhaji Alaska’s active involvement in grassroots mobilisation during the 2024 general election as evidence of his dedication to the party.
He further described Alhaji Alaska as a transformative leader who was willing to commit personal resources to support the development and activities of the party without expecting personal gain.
According to him, the chairmanship aspirant was not ethnocentric and had a deep appreciation for the diverse cultures within the region.
He noted that Alhaji Alaska could communicate in several local languages; a quality he said would help foster unity and inclusiveness within the party.
Other members of Team Alaska seeking regional executive positions are Mr Ali Karim Kamara, First Vice Chairman; Mr Wontina Bamutu, Second Vice Chairman; Mr Salia Dauda Kaleo, Regional Secretary; and Mr Benin Sulemani, Assistant Regional Secretary.
The rest are Adama Amadu, Regional Organiser; Mr Saatir James Kpir-Faatey, Regional Treasurer; Mr Bukari Ali, Regional Communications Director; Alhaji Nuhu Abdul Jalilu, Nasara Coordinator; and Mr Seleman Yahaya, Regional Youth Organiser.
