Accra, Feb. 6, GNA – The National Labour Commission (NLC) has directed the Senior Staff Association Universities of Ghana (SSA‑UoG) to call off its strike with immediate effect.
Dr Bernice A. Welbeck, Acting Executive Secretary of the NLC, in a statement issued to the Ghana News Agency, said the directive was to pave way for further discussions on the Association’s concerns.
The Commission stated that until the strike was called off, the substantive issues could not be heard.
The SSA‑UoG declared a nationwide indefinite strike on Wednesday, February 3, 2026, over conditions of service.
The Commission summoned the striking unions – SSA‑UoG, the Teachers’ and Educational Workers Union of TUC, the Federation of Universities Senior Staff Association of Ghana (FUSSAG), and the Technical Universities Administrators Association of Ghana (TUAAG) – to address their grievances.
Out of the four unions, only TUAAG appeared before the Commission, represented by its Local President from Takoradi and Local Vice Chairman from Accra.
The respondents included the Deputy Director‑General of the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission and a Senior Legal Officer of the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission, among others.
The statement said TUAAG representatives informed the Commission that they were not on strike.
The Commission directed TUAAG that if it was not part of the ongoing strike, then the Union must formally write to disassociate itself from the action.
