Buenos Aires, July 8, (dpa/GNA) – A man has died during spontaneous World Cup celebrations in Argentina, local media reported on Wednesday.
After the dramatic last-16 win against Egypt, the 46-year-old was hit on the head by a stone on Tuesday in the small town of Cañuelas, around 60 kilometres south of the capital Buenos Aires.
The man immediately lost consciousness and died in the ambulance from the effects of the skull trauma. After reviewing surveillance camera footage, police arrested a 20-year-old suspect. A video later appeared on social media, showing the man shortly before his death. He is seen wrapped in an Argentina flag, talking about his experiences while watching the match on television. The world champions came back from 2-0 down to win 3-2 late on.
“We never lost faith,” he said in the video. In Buenos Aires, police arrested 19 people in the area around the city’s famous Obelisk when celebrations went overboard.
In San Miguel de Tucumán in north-western Argentina, there were clashes between fans and police, local media reported. Security forces used rubber bullets to clear the area in the city centre. Reports said five people were arrested and two police officers were injured.
