Sekondi, Feb. 17, GNA – The Western Regional Office of the National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO) recorded a total of 207 disasters in 2025.
The disasters affected more than 4,347 people, out of which 2,551 received support from the organization.
Mr. Daniel Darlington Atitso, the Western Regional Director of NADMO, told the Ghana News Agency in an interview that 308 field assessments associated with disasters were conducted during the year.
He said the organization also carried out 452 public education exercises on disaster prevention. Additionally, staff of the Ghana Meteorological Agency, volunteers, and other stakeholders received capacity-building training, including report writing.
On flood mitigation, NADMO cleaned 86 locations and dredged 44 water bodies across the region.
Mr. Atitso expressed concern over encroachment on waterways and wetlands and called on Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Assemblies to take immediate action to reverse the trend.
He noted that early warning systems had been put in place by the Ghana Meteorological Agency.
The Regional Director stated that public education and field assessments were ongoing, while the organization continued to identify flood-prone areas and silted water bodies. He added that dredging of major drains at the Metropolitan, Municipal, and District levels was ongoing, with response and rescue teams on standby.
Despite these efforts, the Regional NADMO office urgently requires vehicles, relief items, and additional personnel to effectively manage emergencies.
“We appeal to the Government, NGOs, and private sector institutions to come and support us,” Mr. Atitso added
