Kiev says 400 square kilometres of land recaptured in Ukraine

Kiev, Feb 23 (dpa/GNA) – Ukrainian forces have recaptured hundreds of square kilometres in the country’s south, ahead of the fourth anniversary of the all-out Russian invasion, Kiev’s top military officer said on Monday.

“Since the end of January, control over 400 square kilometres and eight settlements has been restored on the Olexandrivka section of the front,” commander-in-chief Oleksandr Syrskyi wrote on social media.

However, the situation on the border between the central and southern Dnipropetrovsk and Zaporizhzhya regions remains difficult, and Russian troops are maintaining pressure, he added.

There were several previous reports of the recapture of hundreds of square kilometres. However, Ukrainian military observers wrote of “stabilization measures” at most.

Posting on Telegram, lawmaker Maryana Bezuhla accused President Volodymyr Zelensky, who had recently spoken of 300 square kilometres, of disinformation.

“Why this lie? Which 300 square kilometres are we talking about?” said Bezuhla, a medical doctor-turned-politician who broke away from Zelensky’s party in 2024.

Tuesday marks the fourth anniversary of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine. Both sides in recent weeks, stepped up operations to gain territory ahead of the February 24 landmark date and amid international negotiations to end the war.
