Assin Kushea (C/R), Feb. 27, GNA – The Ghana Institute of Engineers (GHIE) has taken a decisive step towards shaping the future of engineering in Ghana with plans to construct an Engineering Village at Assin Kushea in the Assin North District of the Central Region.
The initiative followed the transfer of 10.71 acres of land by the Paramount Chief of the Assin Owirenkyi Traditional Area, Ehunabobrim Prah Agyensaim VI, together with his Council of Elders.
Speaking at the event, the Ehunabobrim Prah Agyensaim described the project as a strategic investment in human capital, particularly for young people in the Assin enclave.
He emphasised the importance of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) education in preparing the next generation for productive participation in Ghana’s economy.
Ehunabobrim Agyensaim likened the initiative to the planting of a tree for future generations, noting that, the benefits of the Engineering Village would extend well beyond the present generation.
Receiving the land on behalf of GHIE, Mr Ludwig Annang Hesse, President of the Institution welcomed the partnership with the traditional authorities and the local community, describing it as a strong example of community-driven development.
He encouraged young people to leverage the opportunities the Engineering Village would create to pursue careers in engineering and applied sciences.
The GHIE President said, the Engineering Village had been designed as a multi-functional platform to support engineering practice, skills development and innovation.
He said planned facilities on the land, included an industrial park, an engineering museum, conference and training center, eco-park, recreational spaces, residential accommodation, administrative offices as well as support services as part of the development.
Again, he noted that GHIE had plans to collaborate with basic schools in the area to deliver practical STEM learning, including exposure to robotics and other applied technical skills to help build a pipeline of future engineers.
The ceremony featured the presentation of land documents, unveiling of GHIE signpost, commemorative tree planting on the land and presentation of DEXT Science kits to some schools to support practical science education online with Ghana Education Service curriculum .
The event was attended by traditional leaders, school children, officials of GHIE including Ing Dr Patrick Amoah Bekoe, Vice-President, Ing Kwabena Bempong, Immediate Past-President and Ing Dr Enyonam Kpekpena, Executive Director.
Engineers and Professionals from Ghana Water Company Limited, Telecel Ghana, Volta River Authority, MTN Ghana, Electricity Company of Ghana and Associated Consultants were also present, highlighting broad stakeholder support for the initiative.
