Vienna, Feb 20, (dpa/GNA) – Vienna Airport has resumed operations after a snowstorm closed the airport earlier on Friday, resulting in 150 cancelled flights, the airport authority said.
The first aircraft took off around midday, the airport said.
A total 150 flights had been canceled. Austrian Airlines, a subsidiary of Lufthansa, said around 100 of the cancellations were theirs, according to a spokeswoman.
Arriving long-haul aircraft had been diverted to nearby airport, she said. Delays and further cancellations could not be ruled out for the rest of the day, it said.
Around 20 centimetres of snow had fallen at the airport overnight
Separately, the police in the Austrian Alps region of Tyrol, said a motorist from Munich who was driving with his 17-year-old daughter down a snow-covered road near Sölden was seriously injured, while his daughter suffered minor injuries, after he lost control of his car in the face of an oncoming snowplough.
At a left-hand bend, the man, whose car was not equipped with the required snow chains, according to police, came upon a snowplough. When he tried to brake, he ended up veering off the road and crashed 30 metres down a steep slope.
The heavy overnight snowfall has led to disruptions at Munich’s airport as well.
Departures and arrivals maybe delayed or cancelled, the airport announced on its website on Friday.
