Education Directorate blamed for chaos at schools under 13 soccer tournament

By Emmanuel Nyatsikor, GNA

Adaklu Waya (V/R), Feb. 27 GNA – Mr Jerry Yao Ameko, Adaklu District Chief Executive (DCE) Thursday blamed the Adaklu District Education Directorate for the chaos that erupted at the District’s Basic schools inter-circuit under 13-boys’ soccer tournament at Adaklu Tsriefe on February 20, 2026.

“The Education Directorate cannot exonerate itself from blame for the disgraceful act of hooliganism that culminated in truncating the tournament,” he stated.

Mr Ameko stated this when Mr Mac-Peter Dumatonu, Adaklu District Director of Education, was invited to brief members of the Adaklu District Assembly on the incident at its Special meeting at Adaklu Waya.

He said the refusal of the Directorate to notify the Assembly of the tournament to enable it to provide security for the safety of the players and officials was not the best.

The DCE intimated that according to reports reaching him, a similar incident happened at the tournament at Adaklu Ahunda last year.

“You should have envisaged that a similar thing can happen and plan towards it.

“I don’t take kindly to your failure to notify me of a tournament of such magnitude in my district because I take the blame or the credit for everything that happens in the district,” he told the Director.

Mr Dumatonu told members that due to other official engagements he was not at the tournament at the time of the incident.

He stated that his officers briefed him on the incident and that two teachers were allegedly identified as masterminds of the chaos.

The Director assured that a committee has been formed to investigate the incident and that anyone found culpable would be sanctioned to be a deterrent to others.

The DCE asked that two members of the Assembly should be included in the committee.

A source close to the organisers told the Ghana News Agency that the incident was because of an alleged age cheating by some competing circuits.

He said officials from those circuits allegedly collected Health Insurance Cards of junior brothers of their players to make them eligible to play.

The source stated that though the cards made them eligible to play, their physical features aroused the suspicion of officials of other circuits who protested fervently.

It noted that the situation degenerated into verbal attacks and total chaos which nearly resulted in fisticuffs.

The source said organisers of the programme who could not handle the situation had no option than to call the tournament off.
