ECG WiNE celebrates outstanding professionals at maiden awards

Accra, Feb. 16, GNA- The Electricity Company of Ghana – Women in Engineering (ECG-WiNE) has celebrated the remarkable contributions of female engineers of the public power distributor, at a maiden awards ceremony.

The event, which was held in Accra, brought together senior management of ECG, industry leaders, and dignitaries, served as a platform to honour excellence and promote gender inclusion in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM).

Speaking at the event, Engineer David Boadi Asamoah, Deputy Managing Director of ECG, commended the women engineers for their immense contributions, revealing a significant revenue mobilisation achievement.

“Just last year, they gathered themselves together and launched a programme to improve revenue mobilisation.

During the prepayment metre installation exercise, they monitored the metres we installed and were able to recover 1.8 million Ghana Cedis that would otherwise have gone missing,” he disclosed.

Engineer Alberta Amankwaa, President of ECG WiNE, dispelled misconceptions about women in engineering, saying,
“Engineering is not the preserve of males. It doesn’t require muscles; all it requires is brain power.”

She called on male counterparts to serve as allies by providing a safe working environment for female engineers “ she said.

The highlight of the evening was the recognition of engineers who participated in the revenue mobilisation exercise, with Ing. Sariel Adobea Etwire, Ing. Dr. Dora K Arko, Ing. Abena Addobea, Ing. Patricia Sasu, Ing. Miriam Korantema Amponsah, Ing. Pearl Essel, Ing. Akosua Pokua Kwateng, and Lilian Attah among those honoured for their dedication to the prepayment monitoring project.

In the regional awards category, Ing. Anniebella Ofori (Accra East/Sub-Transmission), Rejoyce Garfo (Tema), Josephine Osei (Ashanti), and Esi Mansah Eduafo (Central) were recognised as Best Regional Female Engineering Practitioners for demonstrating exceptional technical competence and leadership.

The evening also celebrated the association’s Male Champions, including Ing. David Boadi Asamoah, Ing. Kwame Kpekpena, Ing. Godfred Mensah, and Ing. Emmanuel Ankomah, who were honoured for their consistent advocacy and support as male allies.

The Presidential Awards, the highest honour of the night, were presented to Ing. Sariel Etwire, Ing. Dr. Mrs Enyonam Kpekpena, Ing. Miriam Korantema Amponsah, Ing. Benedicta Opoku-Mensah, and Ing. Felicia Ankra Quarm in appreciation of their exceptional support and loyalty to the vision of WiNE.

Special recognition also went to Grace Appiah, who received the Girl Child Empowerment Champion award for her commitment to mentoring young girls into engineering, with three of her foundation’s children now pursuing electrical engineering at KNUST.

The event, which saw a total of 73 individuals honoured across various categories, underscored ECG’s commitment to inclusion and development while inspiring the next generation of female innovators in Ghana.
