Akatsi (VR), Feb. 16, GNA – Mr Anthony Kojo Owusu, Akatsi South Constituency Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has expressed renewed optimism following recent remarks by Mr Alban Sumana Bagbin, Speaker of Ghana’s Parliament.
During the launch of Parliament’s Corporate Strategic Plan for 2026–2030 in Accra, Mr Bagbin stated it was appropriate to allow Mr Bernard Ahiafor, First Deputy Speaker and MP for Akatsi South, to succeed him, having explained his duties and assigned responsibilities.
In a statement issued to the Ghana News Agency (GNA), Mr Owusu said Mr Bagbin’s comments were widely interpreted by Akatsi South constituents as a strong vote of confidence in Mr Ahiafor.
“For many party faithful and residents, the Speaker’s sentiments echo a long-held belief,” he noted.
Referring to Mr Bagbin’s remarks, Mr Owusu—popularly called ‘Westfalia’—described Mr Ahiafor as a key figure for Akatsi South, underscoring the lawmaker’s strategic importance to both the constituency and the country.
“The convergence of these endorsements has reignited conversations across the Municipality, with supporters urging unity and prayer for Mr Ahiafor, as many believe his parliamentary career could culminate in the highest legislative office,” he added.
Currently serving in a leadership role in Parliament, Mr Ahiafor has built a reputation as a disciplined lawmaker and respected voice on legal and governance matters.
Supporters noted that his steady rise has been a source of pride for Akatsi South, where his political journey began.
While the prospect of him becoming Speaker remains speculative, the growing support highlights the strong connection between Ahiafor and his constituents. Across community gatherings and political discussions, residents emphasized faith in leadership and the hope that Akatsi South may again shape Ghana’s parliamentary history.
Mr Ahiafor first contested the Akatsi South Constituency Parliamentary seat on the NDC ticket during the 2012 by-election, following Mr Edward Doe Adjaho’s elevation to Speaker of Parliament in the Sixth Parliament of the Fourth Republic of Ghana. He was elected with 12,079 votes and has since maintained the parliamentary seat.
