Agitated cocoa farmers in Assin North protest producer price reduction

By Samuel Ackon

Assin Dansame (C/R), Feb. 19, GNA – Some cocoa farmers in the Assin North District of the Central Region have staged a peaceful protest to register their displeasure over the reduction in the cocoa producer price for the 2025/2026 season.

The farmers said the decision would adversely affect their livelihoods, welfare and ability to support their families.

The protesters were drawn from Assin Dansame, Asempanaye, Praso, Bereku and Assin Nuaso.

Speaking to the media on behalf of the farmers, Mr Ransford Quainoo, Chief Farmer of Assin Brasiako, lamented that the price cut would severely affect their capacity to finance their children’s education despite decades of dedication to cocoa farming.

He noted that the previous government offered a relatively better price and expressed concern that the current reduction would diminish their expected incomes.

Mr Quainoo appealed to the government to either maintain the previous price or fulfil the GH¢7,000.00 producer price promise made during the 2024 election campaign, stressing that anything below that would impoverish cocoa farmers.

Meanwhile, Nana Ama Dede, Aduana Queenmother of Assin Dansame, also expressed concern, stating that cocoa purchasing clerks were facing pressure from farmers demanding payment of their proceeds.

She called on the authorities to urgently address the concerns of cocoa farmers to avert further unrest in cocoa-growing communities.
