Kotoka Airport to get multipurpose terminal 2, easing congestion—Minister

Accra, Jan. 13, GNA – Mr Joseph Bukari Nikpe, the Minister for Transport, on Tuesday announced plans to convert Terminal 2 of the Kotoka International Airport into a multipurpose terminal.

That, he explained, would have a connecting concourse between Terminals 2 and 3, adding that “This high-priority government project aims to alleviate congestion at Terminal 3, which often becomes overwhelmed during peak hours, while Terminal 2 remains underutilized.”

Mr Nikpe made the announcement when he appeared before the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) of Parliament’s public hearing in Parliament House, Accra.

“Mr Chairman, we experience a lot of congestion in the evenings at Terminal 3. We have Terminal 2 that is not that busy when it gets to peak hours. The mind is to do a connecting concourse between Terminal 2 and Terminal 3 just to facilitate the movement of our international passengers so that we can share Terminal 2 with Terminal 3 for our international passengers,” he said.

According to the Minister, the repurposing project was scheduled for implementation in 2026 and will enable Terminal 2 to serve both domestic and international passengers, significantly improving comfort and ease of travel at the airport.

He said, “It is a high government priority project that will bring some kind of comfort to our international passengers. Terminal 2 will now be a multipurpose terminal for domestic and international,” he told PAC.

The PAC is holding a public hearing from Monday, January 12, to Tuesday, January 13, to consider the reports of the Auditor-General on the Public Accounts of Ghana ministries, departments, and other agencies for the year ended December 31, 2024.
